He was talking to the media ahead of the final against New Zealand. Clarke stated that the decision would allow him to focus entirely on Test cricket, which he still considers to be the pinnacle of the sport.
The retirement would bring end to a remarkable 12 year career during which Clarke played 244 matches scoring 7907 at an average of 44.42.
It would also give his successor the required time and space to prepare for the next world cup. Clarke refused to give out any names when asked about who would be his successor, saying the decision would be made by the selectors. He did, however, say that Steven Smith would likely be in contention for his vacant post.
